Italy Pursues Arctic Collaboration with Canada

(MENAFN) Antonio Tajani, Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, said on Monday that Rome intends to take a more active role in the Arctic and is exploring potential collaborations with Canada on Arctic-related initiatives.

Tajani met with Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand in Rome, after which the two ministers held a joint press briefing.

The discussions covered a broad range of topics, including bilateral Italy-Canada relations, climate change, security, energy, scientific research, and Arctic affairs. “Italy wants to play a larger role in that part of the world. Canada is already active, and we can work together,” Tajani said. He also invited Canada to participate in an Arctic summit that Italy will host in March, highlighting the potential for collaborative initiatives.

Anand emphasized that the two countries share priorities in Arctic security, defense, NATO-related cooperation, support for Ukraine, and regional issues in the Middle East and Gaza. She pointed out that 70% of Canada’s coastline and 40% of its territory are connected to the Arctic.

The Canadian minister added that ongoing efforts include increasing defense spending, working closely with NATO and the North American Aerospace Defense Command, and establishing additional northern facilities to address threats from sea, air, and land. “This remains one of our priorities,” she said.
